Sara Story Design

There is an oriental influence apparent in Sara Story's designs. Not surprising as she was born in Japan and travelled extensively in Asia. Her style is contemporary, eclectic and timeless. Clean lines, contrasting neutrals, rich textures and a global streak are typical of her work. I think I need a Hermes box or 2.

Colour in the kitchen

Elizabeth Dimond emailed us a link to the Elmira Stove Works. WOW! Talk about colour in the kitchen. Here in Australia there are many colours in appliances as long as you basically want white or stainless steel. There are of course SMEG fridges and dishwashers but I've never seen a co-ordinated kitchen range like these retro beauties. Although I can't see it online Elizabeth says she's spotted these wonders in that retro colour to beat all colours ..... avocado. Now you're talking!

Drake Design Associates
Jamie Drake is a genius with colour. His portfolio is brilliant, and this Fifth Avenue loft really stood out. "Surprise and movement - that's what I like. Colors both ground and animate this space, whether washing in yellow or popping with pink. High gloss lacquer, antique mirror and rich silk velvets and shantungs polish up the eclectic mix of furnishings."

Much love
Punchy chandeliers

Did you see these amazing chandeliers in this kitchen by Civility Design that Kim included in her kitchen post yesterday? What a way to pack a punch in a room. For a couple of days now Pink from Casapinka has been wrestling with a colourful chandelier dilemma herself. Not sure if I'm into the orange myself but those light fittings are a big statement. Love a bit of drama and fun in a room. What do you think?

Antonia Hutt
Antonia Hutt's understanding of the exceptional and her love for refinement are the core of her design philosophy. So says her website and I think these pictures reinforce that belief. These jewel like spaces speak of her training in the arts, silversmithing, jewellery and allied crafts. Her grounding in fine antiques led her into interior architecture. Based in Los Angeles her work draws on her exceptional taste and wealth of experience.

Playboy Town House

"The discerning city-dweller of individual ways and comfortable means is turning more and more to the superb outlets for decorative and architectural self-expression inherent in the town house ......." Playboy, May 1962.

To see the full page scanned images of this 1962 classic article (and didn't they buy Playboy for the articles?!) you'll find it here. Take the time to read the article. It's a scream. Remember Playboy isn't just for the "room" porn. Thanks to the team at Meathaus Enterprises for their selfless act of scanning and posting this classic.

Cuckoo for colour

Are you considering painting bright colours in your home? If so, let the following photos of a penthouse in Montréal be of inspiration to you. These may be OTT for alot of people, but it takes courage to use bright colours, and these folks could not be more courageous or adventurous.

A gorgeous home in Britain that is so warm and welcoming. The palette is beautiful. I have a cottage decorated in my dreams with colours such as these.

Kitchen help
Andrika, a Torontonian, emailed asking for some ideas for her kitchen redo. She has white cabinets and can't decide on a wall colour. So I sifted through my photo collection and oddly enough, most of the kitchens I found with white cabinets had white walls. Here are some that I found with some fun colours. The one above is my favourite. LOVE the blue and green colour combination. The icy blue wall is incredible (!!!). If anyone has ideas for Andrika or has a favourite among these photos, leave us your thoughts in a comment. We'd also welcome photos if you think you have a great kitchen wall colour you'd like to share.

Modern muted masterpiece

If you prefer interiors with colour, you may change your mind. This home of whites and creams is modern, but not cold and uninviting.

Helen Green

Helen Green, a London based interior designer creates these elegant, refined spaces. Restrained but not straight laced these rooms are evocative of the glamorous 30s and 50s. Neutral colours are layered with soft, sensuous textures and pre-war glamour wafts through stylish salons. There is an undeniable luxe ambience combining with the prevailing calm. Relax in a time gone by in these totally contemporary rooms.

Casa Batlló

I want to take a break. I really do. Seems like half of North America is on summer holidays and things are getting a little chilly in Australia. How about Spain? Barcelona? Then the only place we can stay is Casa Batlló the impressive Art Noveau dreamscape conjured up by Antoni Gaudi. Now for a stroll on Las Ramblas. After we'll eat and drink in the late night air.

Luis Pons
Architect Luis Pons' firm, Aponwao Design, is responsible for a wide range of projects that use materials from one end of the spectrum to another. Travertine marble for the East Hampton beach house of Latin singer Chayanne, and bakery carts covered in latex for dividers in a client's apartment. His own apartment is covered almost floor to ceiling in air mattresses and inflatable furniture. The first group of photos below are of Luis' live/work space, the next set are examples of the firm's interior design projects, and the last are objects designed by the firm, including side tables made of metal ball-chains, and 1950s furniture applied with picture frame moldings.

Oh no tagged!

Drey from Bijou Kaleidoscope, a fellow Aussie design blogger tagged us today to tell 7 things about ourselves. So as Kim is fast asleep I'll jump in first and do 3. Kim you don't mind doing 4 do you?
1. That's Mickey. Kelvin (my husband) and I share our 2 bedroom apartment with him. I love him to death not just because he is such a good looking beast but because he is also my husband's guide dog. Kelvin lost his sight at 18 due to an accident.
2. Enough about my husband! This is supposed to be about me. I used to be a medical student but I saw the light and became an interior designer.
3. I was in Berlin (on a surgical elective) when the wall came down and I can remember when man walked on the moon. Now th
